Magical Ice Powers

The day before Thanksgiving, I got a call from Joey saying he'd be in San Jose for a few days over the long weekend helping a friend move. Yesterday he called again and asked if we wanted to come down to San Jose to catch up and maybe play some games.

I met Joey back in 2002 at Operation Catapult, an engineering/science summer camp (the same place I met The Spectator). We hadn't seen each other in five years until last summer when I was in Berkeley and he came up to visit me. We had a blast, and when I moved out here this fall we figured we might actually see each other a little more often, so the fifteen month interval seemed like nothing.

Mike and I drove down to San Jose and met up with Joey and Ryan, the guy who was moving into a new loft. The place was nice, and the dog was hyper, but we didn't stay long before heading out for some ice cream. Sadly, the ice cream shop they wanted to go to was closed, so we walked to a bar instead. The guys had some fancy-smancy beer while we all talked and made fun of the couple nearby us because the guy kept inching his chair closer to the girl every so often. Joey and Ryan talked about some of their college experiences, and we also got to relive some of the more embarrassing moments of Catapult.

After they finished their beers, we went back to Ryan's place for omg-delicious brownies and Castle Crashers (XBOX game). I'd never played CC before but it was pretty easy to pick up. I wish they'd found enough batteries (remember everything was just moved in) so that all four of us could have played -- that would have been a madhouse of fun. Mike and I played while Joey helped us figure out the controls and what we were supposed to be doing. I like side-scrolling whack-a-mole games like that. We also had magical powers in addition to our bludgeoning weapons. Good times.

I wish we could have stayed longer, but with the hour drive home, we decided to leave a little after 1:30 a.m., which worked out nicely since we've gotten into a very bad habit of going to bed between two and three and getting up between ten and noon. Sometime we'll rectify that, but I think it'll take both Mike getting a job and me having a more traditional work schedule for that to happen.
